Supporting children and young people with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder
Introduction
Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) is sometimes misdiagnosed as ADHD, autism, or other disorders. Children and young people who are misdiagnosed are at risk of not receiving the right support, being misunderstood, or even being blamed for behaviours caused by their disability.
Join us for this 2-hr workshop to learn more about the indicators of FASD, how it can present in children and young people, and you will also walk away with some practical knowledge and skills to assist you in supporting young people living with FASD.
During the session, you will take part in a reflective practice, using a case study and our facilitator, Prue Walker, will share her vast knowledge and skills in this area.
Presenter: This training is presented by Prue Walker.
Prue is a social worker and Senior Project Officer, FASD with the CETC where she is working on the development of an integrated FASD-trauma practice framework. Prue developed an interest in FASD through her work in child protection and out of home care in Victoria and the Northern Territory. In 2009 she visited the US and Canada on a Churchill Fellowship investigating models of care for children with FASD in OOHC. Prue has delivered many workshops and presentations on FASD and provides consulting services to care teams. She is a member of the FASD Guideline Development Group, the Victorian FASD Special Interest Group, and also works at the Victorian Fetal Alcohol Service (VicFAS) diagnostic clinic at Monash Children’s Hospital.

Target Audience
This session is designed for carers, residential workers, case workers, and managers in out-of-home care interested to learn more about FASD and the features of appropriate support, intervention and planning for children and young people affected by FASD.
