CHC50313 Diploma of Child, Youth and Family Intervention
Knowledge about the neuroscience of trauma and development has revolutionized the ways that needs of children and young people in out of home care are understood and met. Along with other ways of thinking, it is now established that the trauma informed relationship based therapeutic care can significantly improve the stability and quality of experience for children and young people in foster, residential and kinship care.
The CHC50313 Diploma of Child, Youth and Family Intervention has been designed to support carers and practitioners to learn the skills and knowledge to work effective in any of these care environments.
In some jurisdictions, such as NSW, the Diploma is the minimum mandatory qualification for all workers in the Intensive Therapeutic Care System.
This is why the CETC is excited to be able to offer the CHC50313 Diploma of Child, Youth and Family Intervention for all those who work with children and young people in care, especially residential care. This practical course will build the capability of individuals to support trauma informed therapeutic care approaches.
It is offered to individuals as well as to agencies who may wish to upskill parts or all of their workforce in this specific qualification.
The content of the Diploma draws on and integrates the work of Bessel van der Kolk, Judy Atkinson, Steve Porges, Bruce Perry, Allan Schore, Christine Courtois, Judith Herman, Dan Siegel, Gabor Mate, Ruth Lanius, Pat Ogden and others. These are all leading researchers and authors who have a direct relationship with the Australian Childhood Foundation and have influenced their approach to supporting traumatised children and young people and the important adults in the networks around them.
By enrolling in the Diploma through the CETC, you will learn about:
• the relevance of the neuroscience of trauma to child development, attachment and healing
• how to assess and respond to the needs of children and young people in care
• support culturally strong practice
• how to work with and influence therapeutic care teams
• ways to intervene across systems in ways that promote stability and permanency for children and young people in care
• how to work effectively in trauma informed care contexts

Secondly, we recognise that this course will be accessed by very busy individuals. So we use a combination of virtual classroom and self-paced learning opportunities to ensure that individuals and teams can complete the qualification, despite the many competing demands on their time.
Last but not least, this course is flexible – all the components can be delivered for individuals as well as at an organisation level or network level. Our beautiful, user friendly online portal is accessible around the clock for self-paced learning.
What is involved?
In order to graduate with the CHC50313 Diploma of Child, Youth and Family Intervention, students need to complete 16 units of competency from the Community Services Training package – 9 core units and 7 electives.
This usually takes 12 to 18 months. However, it may be that individuals already hold some of these units which may reduce the time commitment required. We will work with each individual or with an organisation to map current qualifications to the units of competency and develop an individualised learning plan for each student.
We will support each student with a combination of direct instruction and interactive discussion sessions to make sure that you stay on track, complete all your assessment tasks and enjoy learning as an experience.
